Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Houston, Texas?

This is good barbeque although I will admit, being from Central Texas, I know of better barbeque with far superior service and lower prices. I find Thelma’s rude, impolite and ignorant service just totally unnecessary. I also find the decor of this place deplorable. It is pitiful and just down right wrong that after “packing in” the amount of customers she has over the years that she does not have a better, clean and decent place for her patrons to enjoy her barbeque. Given her ignorance and her appearance, one has to wonder where her profits have gone because they surely have not gone in the physical appearance of her restaurant. I personally would rather get a bad grade of barbeque with better service than drive to Thelma’s to either not get served (because she has run out of meat) or to have it served to me rudely. I say drive elsewhere and get better service in a cleaner atmosphere.

I have eaten barbeque all over the south and Queen’s is up there with the best of them. The pink smoke ring on the brisket forewarns you of the incredible smoke flavor of the meat, complimented perfectly by their homemade bbq sauce. The brisket stuffed bake potatoes are great as well. More recently, I have been hooked on their Tejas Chicken, a huge smoked chicken breast, a couple of slices of smoked ham, with pepper jack cheese, bbq sauce on a jalepeno cheese bun. Incredible sandwich and a meal all by itself. The pecan cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream is irrestible as well.Pros + Food, Price, serviceCons – parking

I was most impressed with breakfast. Large portions, well seasoned, fairly quick delivery of orders. I had the American breakfast- 2 eggs/hashbrowns/bacon/ biscuit. I didn’t eat, but looked at with envy, the steak and eggs combo. That looked amazing. The pecan walfes also caught my attention. Thing it over, this Goode company restaurant is probably undervalued. It’s not as busy as some of its sister chains, yet the food is always good. It’s not really a date place/but a good place to catch up with old friends.Pros + low key/good foodCons – parking- on the weekend can be a pain.

Since moving to Houston I have found Barnaby’s on West Gray to be one of my favorite places to eat. We’ve tried the Barnabys on Shephard but like the atmosphere of the one on West Gray much better. My favorite is the Lunas Meat Lasagna……and the spinach is great too. My fiance gets the chicken salad and loves it! Keep in mind the portions are generous, you won’t be hungry when you leave. I eat a TON of food and I never leave Barnabys feeling hungry. For light eaters I’d suggest getting the half portion if they offer it, that’s usually plenty of food for most people. We’ve tried almost everything on the menu and have always left happy. My fiance and I never spent more than $30 when we go there and that always includes the tip. We usually get a couple of ice teas but if it’s a weekend we’ll get some wine and the price never goes over that. It’s usually under $20 with a tip. I’m usually pretty generous with tips though….Barnaby’s on west gray was actually where my fia

Teotihuacán is the best Mexican restaurant in Houston. Quality is consistently good. Meat is always good and tasty. Both locations have great food. The original location(4624 Irvington Blvd) has faster service. The staff is friendly and welcoming to English- and Spanish-speakers. We’ve been coming here for 3.5 years and still love it. Everything on the menu is great including: fajitas, enchiladas verdes, flautas, & pollo ranchero. Deserts are good too, such as tres leches, flan, & crepes. Great lunch specials for less than $5. Margaritas cost $1.25 from 3-7 Mon-Fri. Breakfast if always good. Chips are served hot, and homemade flour tortillas are out-of-this-world.Pros + Inexpensive, Great Food & Service, FunCons – Not enough parking, Opens at 8 a.m.
