Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Houston, Texas?
Anyone who eats here needs to try the Vietnamese sandwiches – at $2 they are a TOTAL steal, and way healthier and more satisfying than any other meal you could get for that price. I recommend the incredibly flavorful Vegetarian Sandwich with Tofu. Their other menu items are good too, with big portions and good value (but, my gosh, TWICE the price of the sandwiches at $4!). Cali is the BEST – I will eat here for a cheap lunch ANY day over Subway, Quizno’s and any other chain. Don’t forget to try the thai coffe either…Pros + Sandwiches, menu variety, Bang for Buck!
I heard about Frenchy’s forever before I finally tried it… at 1 a.m. after burning a few trees! Needless to say it was the best fried chicken I’ve ever had and I haven’t been back to Popeye’s since! The Scott Street store is a legend for deserving reasons and it’s the perfect place to grab a meal before watching a game on the UH campus. There are always lines, but the employees have always been friendly. Order the King Special and fill up. Remember to eat your Frenchy Fries first, though– they’re seasoned to perfection but they get cold and stale fast. The red beans and rice are also incredible. Do yourself a favor and get some Frenchy’s tonight!Pros + Ultimate Fried ChickenCons – Moderate wait times, shady ‘hood
Mel’s is one of the best country cooking, low priced joints anywhere, and has unique character. At least one country music headliner eats there regularly. The ambiance is “special” in a country sort of way. You are well looked after, but comparing it to a restaurant, well it is a country cafe not a restaurant. Never had anything worse than pretty good over 10 years. Big portions, great country cooking, Very Tasty. The signature MegaMelBurger is for the mad – 1 1/2 pounds of beef, 1 pound of bacon, 1/2 pound of cheese, plus lettuce/tomato/etc. The list of those who ate one and how long it took are on the honor roll – record 8 minutes I believe (would you want to know that person?)
