Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Hartford, Connecticut?
My husband and I lived in Newington,CT for 5 years, and just about every other day he frequented Doogie’s. The first time he brought me there amazed me. They weren’t kidding when they said home of the two foot hot dog! There food is good, service is good. The wait staff makes you feel like you are at home.Great place to swing into for lunch on your way down the turnpike. They even do orders to go.
Was delighted to know there was a great hamburger place close so I surprised my husband by taking him there. The first visit was okay although getting the wait staff’s attention required getting up and going to the bar. The next 2 times we had the same problem with getting the attention of staff. The burger were never cooked as ordered, and my request for a slice of onion resulted in 2 rings of onion being placed on the burger. Personally I feel like we gave them 3 chances to get it right and they couldn’t manage it. We will not try again.Pros + not busy and no one in the resturant part around 5-6Cons – hard to get the attention of wait staff, food not cooked to order, interesting parking
The pork ribs were really quite excellent; the meat was falling off the bone. I got the half portion of the ribs, and it was definitely enough. The coleslaw was fantastic – if you like a good simpe coleslaw with not a lot of mayonnaise to junk it up. As for the New Orleans/Cajun aspect…. Not so authentic, but decent I suppose for a New England attempt at Cajun cooking. Being raised for the last 19 years in New Orleans and an absolute lover of (good) food, I am able to speak from a pretty informed perspective. The “red beans and rice” were pretty dry, but the andouille sausage was pretty authentic. The “jambalaya” was actually more just like rice and a little bland for true jambalaya, but my friend (a thoroughly New England palate) enjoyed it. That’s actually all I can speak from. The atmosphere was loud and rockin – perfect for college students like us. The service was a little lacking, but it might have been the UConn championship Final Four game that distracted her. All in all: st
just wanted to take a moment to express my disappointment with the accommodations we were provided with on Valentine’s night. The Pond House decided to open up the banquet hall to accomodate more reservations. I realize that by opening up the banquet hall for more reservations you were able to increase your head count, however, the atmosphere was awkward at best, our table/chairs were glorified uncomfortable patio furniture, and I walked away from the experience feeling like I was the victim of a scam. I must say that the food was good, however, this did not make up for the lack of comfort, given the cost of the meal. I regret my decision to dine at the Pond House. While theymay have increased the customer count for one night, they definitely lost my repeat business.
