Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Detroit, Michigan?
Wheat and Rye is best known locally for its stacked meat sandwiches. They’re what make it more than another slightly-better-than-average neighborhood bar. Tender sliced roast beef piled high, served with onions and horseradish makes for a sandwich the equal of any area deli’s, and then some. The quantity doesn’t come at the expense of quality- this is good stuff. The service is prompt and competant.
Been getting pizza from Green Lantern for all my life. How lucky to have grown up down the road from the best pizza in the Detroit area. Having moved away over 20 years ago I missed it and thought maybe I had elevated the pizza to impossible levels. Last week my memories were aknowledged with the pizza I remembered. The crust is crisp, chewy, tender and yet substantial enough to support toppings. The meaty, hand cut, deliciously distinctive pepperoni is like no other pepperoni you have ever had on pizza. Generous toppings, perfectly prepared. The cheese is perfectly proportioned, and never tough or “globby”, even when you eat it cold the next day because you ordered 2 extra large pizzas for 2 people. My son was amazed at the integrity of the crust the following day, still chewy and delicious, not the texture of milk bones. The sauce perfect as always in taste and amount. We came across the border to sample the two polish places. I am a pierogi eating and making expert, and I ordered the peirogi sampler. Priced right, the server was quick and pleasant. My Lady had the mushroom crepe (she didn’t want her soup so i ate the borsht). the peirogies were deep-fried . They were tasty but they squirted when I opened them up…too crunchy. The fillings were all good. Lots of sour cream offered. My Lady’s crepe was dry but fine. The soup was fresh but too sweet for my taste. Prices are reasonable, food is tasty, and I would come back this place gain. The other restaurant is just a walk away. We went there after and shared an order of pan-fried pierogies and potato pancakes. Theirs were definitely better. Both restaurants are as Polish as you are going to get! The Cafe does have “flacki” (tripe!) which i can’t stand but that is certainly very Polish! We went an early Saturday afternoon. Pros + authentic surroundings..quick serviceCons – deep
