In ShortAt night, the lofty space is an intimate, bohemian den with crimson-colored walls and candles on every dark-wood table. But heavy gold curtains and kitschy crystal chandeliers hanging from the rafters create a dramatic effect even in daylight. Helpful, unpretentious servers keep the Bay Area vibe alive while the menu spotlights simply prepared comfort cuisine with a creative edge. Smooth goat-cheese fondue with grilled bread and crisp green apples for dipping is wildly popular. A light, lemony vinaigrette spruces up the sweet and savory salad of spinach, dried currants and feta. For entrees, a crispy-fried pork cutlet stuffed with Gruyere cheese is satisfying and hearty, sided by a mound of mashed potatoes. The lighter fontina ravioli swims in a buttery sauce touched with truffle oil. Make-your-own s’mores, constructed out of homemade graham crackers, molten bittersweet chocolate and marshmallow, are a playful and satisfying way to end the meal.

Since I’ve been in LA, I’ve gone to mostly clubs and lounge-y type places. Fun, but not a lot of warmth. This place reminds me of home (just outside of Chicago). The Backstage is old-school (in a good way), unpretentious and friendly. The staff is not typical ‘seen it all, done it all’ LA types. They seem like regular people who care about doing their job well and making you feel comfortable. The food is bar food plus. I don’t know exactly where the ‘plus’ comes from, but everything I’ve tried here is better than at other places. The prices are low, the drinks are strong, and the room is very warm and comfortable. Nice mix of people, liking each other and having a good time. I wish the real world could be a little more like this place. There was a birthday party there the other night and the people seemed to be having more fun than a bunch of kids at Chucky Cheese. Pros + Friendly staff and crowd, great food, strong drinks, low pricesCons – Wish I lived a little closer

Wow – I was a little sad when I saw the Normandie Room was closed down for a week or 2 – but now that it’s re-opened, it looks amazing! It’s the same bar, same vibe, same great bartenders, but looks like a brand new place! They did a great job fixing it up while keeping it the same. My friends and I couldn’t be happier. We went both nights this past weekend – Friday & Saturday – and even with the pouring rain the place was packed. I think it’s safe to say the Normandie is back. I just hope we don’t have to start waiting in lines outside to get in. I’ve been going to this bar for years and am so happy that the place looks so good (and so did the ladies). BTW – thanks for not raising your prices either! ;)Pros + Strong Drinks, Pool Table, New Look, Great PeopleCons – Crowded – but is that really a con?

Went there for dinner and was left feeling a little underwhelmed. For how much they charge we would have been better off going to a more upscale restaurant where you really feel taken care of. I like the dinner menu because I found a lot of interesting choices and you can construct your own meal with a choice of protein and two sides. Our server was nice but somehow I still felt like I was at more of a breakfast/lunch spot then a dinner one.My entree alone was $27 and for what I got that seemed exorbitant and honestly a touch greedy.I think if they are going to be charging those prices they should step it up a bit with the food and by instructing their servers to make a mental note that their customers are paying high end dinner prices so to wait on them with a little more flair.Pros + Interesting menu, decent foodCons – overpriced
