sister to the austin venue, this place has a different live music act almost every night. the decor is retro and just run down enough that it’s convincing. up front is the bar and main stage area. behind this, a large second room holds pool tables, another smaller bar and the toilet room area. some nights a guy comes in, sets up folding card tables and sells assorted bar-b-q, hot dogs and whatever back there. that’s their food offering, and a hint that you’re here to drink and listen to live music. the patrons tend to be an older bunch…lawyer types in suits and jackets who usually dissipate by 9:30 p.m. or so, making way for younger (late 20’s) rockers and young professionals coming out to let off steam from being in an office cubicle all day long. the clubs location does draw people in there 20’s and 30’s. of course, a lot depends on the act(s) booked for the night. there is room to dance. the concert area is sized just right. drinks are a bit pricy, but usually there’s

I’ve lived in Houston all my life and had yet to try Capital Grille. My lovely bf thought that Vday 09 would be a great chance for both of us to try it out. We went for the 13th to try and cut down on the crowds a teeny bit. We got lucky and snagged a parking space without valet. The restaurant was packed to the gills. We were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time and greeted by our very pleasant and knowledgeable server Rene. The wine list is extensive with choices in various price ranges. We chose an easy drinking cab and proceeded to go over the menu. Here’s what we had:Shrimp cocktail – 5 large, fresh, dense meat shrimp served on ice with a mild cocktail sauceFilet and butter poached lobster – melt in your mouth filet, paired with tender lobster claw meat over soft mashed potatoesKona crusted dry aged sirloin with roasted shallot butter – a flavorful crust of ground Kona coffee, something different and deliciousParmesan truffle fries – like McD’s on steroi

My friend reserved a VIP area. It was on the right, in the back, near the men’s bathroom. Though the interior is nice, I expected better. I could see why no one was sitting on the second couch; it was diagonal to the men’s restroom. You could actually see the urinals and men relieving themselves. The smell of urine filled the VIP area. I tried to numb my sense of smell through champagne. It was only a temporary solution, for after the glass of champagne was finished, the smell of urine was back. I’ve been to alot of clubs, and this is the first to have had a really bad smell. The security guard told me it was club policy for that door to be open. If the rule has been placed as a security measure, they should come up with a different solution. If it’s for convenience of the male patrons, they are dismissing the ambiance of their VIP crowd. For a club that tries to position itself as elite and upscale, see their website, you would think it would care about the smell of its establishment

This review is mostly for their Thursday night salsa night. Ok let me disclaim my review by saying I am a hardcore salsa dancer. Going to Sky Bar every Thursday is like going to church every week for…
