Where are the alpha helices and beta strands?
In order to answer this question, we’ll select different portions of the molecule and color them differently. Selection is one of the most important capabilities of the PE, so we’ll take a few moments to introduce it. Much of the exploration power of the PE comes from repeating this sequence of operations: Select; then Hide, or Render & Color There are two ways you can select a subset of the atoms in the molecule: from the menu, or by typing a command. The menu is convenient when you don’t know the command to accomplish what you want, but becomes cumbersome for complex selection processes. Typing commands may be faster if you know the commands, and there are some commands which cannot be issued from the menu. Using “and”, “or”, “not” and parentheses in commands allows complex selections to be done in a single operation, which can avoid a long series of menu clicks. Although the selections below are not complex, we’ll describe both methods to introduce them. Try both, and afterwards use
