Most of the beaches near Houston are either still being repaired after Ike, or they aren’t that great to begin with because they are polluted from the oil rigs in the Gulf (i.e. Port O’Connor and Texas City). I don’t know if you’re familiar with Texas beaches, but if you’re willing to travel a couple of hours away from Houston, there are several fun and beautiful beaches to visit. Rockport is a little over two and a half hours from Houston. It has an artsy downtown and a marina that is right across from the beach. There are several art galleries, as well as many excellent seafood restaurants (try the Boiling Pot or Hemingway’s). Corpus Christi is about 3 hours and 15 minutes from Houston and has quite a few beaches. Corpus Christi Beach (or North Beach) is located across the Harbor bridge from downtown. The U.S.S. Lexington Museum, the Texas State Aquarium, and several good seafood restaurants (Blackbeard’s) are located on C.C. Beach, so this would be fun for young children. For young
