Where are Refugees?
Refugees flee to nearby countries, called a country of first asylum. They are often extremely vulnerable, generally arriving without formal documentation or formal authorisation from the host country, which may be reluctant to provide legal protection. Two thirds of the world’s refugees live in developing countries. 7 out of 12 million refugees are confined to remote refugee camps, segregated settlements and urban slums, for ten years or more, without effective protection or basic rights such as the right to work, move freely and have a basic education. Conflict may arise with local populations. Even within refugee camps access to food, water and basic services is limited raising the incidence of malnutrition and disease. For these warehoused refugees finding a solution is like winning the lottery.
