WHERE ARE MEASUREMENT UNITS NEEDED IN XML?
Potential users of XML measurement units specifications seek several different sorts of capabilities. Many of these have been noted in early proposals to the WG (e.g., XML-Data), in requests from the XSL WG, and in email discussions concerning implicitly structured strings (e.g., “3 inches”). Various users have sought to: • Specify the measurement units for data elements (or attributes) in XML Schemas; • Specify arbitrary measurement units for element instances in an XML document; • Specify measured properties (and dimensionalities) for elements in an XML Schema, and then to specify consistent measurement units for each element instance in an XML document. • Construct and refer to shared registries of measured properties and systems of measurement units.
