It likes old-growth forests with nourishing undergrowth bamboo on a gentle slope, where streams are not too far away. Fossil evidence shows that 0.7 million years ago, the giant panda was widely distributed in Myanmar (Burma), northern Vietnam, and much of eastern and southern China, as far north as Beijing. But today they are confined to temperate forests scattered across 6 mountain ranges in southwestern China: Minshan, Qinling, Qionglai, Liangshan, Daxiangling, and Xiaoxiangling.
