Salmon is Canada ’s most important farmed species, accounting for 75% of the volume and 81% of the value of the industry in 2002. Atlantic salmon and chinook were the predominant salmon species farmed in British Columbia by 103 active grow-out sites. In New Brunswick , Atlantic salmon was farmed by 68 active grow-outs. Although Canada ranked 22nd in the world for aquaculture value in 2002, British Columbia was the fourth largest producer of farmed salmon in the world after Norway, Chile, and the United Kingdom. Approximately 200 licensed trout farms operated in Ontario in 2002, with 61 of the largest farms accounting for 95% of the production of farmed fish in the province.
