A total of four designs will be released throughout the year to celebrate the Bicentennial. Each design will represent a different stage of Lincoln’s life ranging from his humble beginnings in Kentucky to his Presidency in Washington, DC. Release of the first design featuring the iconic image of a log cabin was celebrated with an event held in Hodgenville, Kentucky, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. The event took place on February 12, 2009 with approximately 1,500 people attended. The ceremony was held by the Deputy Director of the United States Mint and the Governor of Kentucky. After the ceremony, attendees were given the opportunity to exchange paper bills for rolls of the new 2009 Lincoln Pennies. In total $5,000 worth of new pennies were distributed at the event.
