The tomb was discovered in 1980 in Jerusalem. The late 70s and early 80s were a boom time in Israel for new construction. This building activity resulted in unearthing many new tombs dating back centuries. In order for construction to resume, the Talpiot site quickly was excavated by archaeologist Shimon Gibson, sealed and built over.
