Source: Japanese Navy & Ships board of J-Aircraft Contributor: Ed Low, Lester Trauth, Jeff D, Anken, Bob, Alexander Frster, Adm. Gurita. This picture was on sale at E-Bay (by oregonduck2988). The auctioneer was unable to identify the Japanese carrier, but gave the date as Summer 1945, and the location as Kure Harbor. Board members identified the ship as the merchant aircraft carrier SHIMANE MARU and the date of the photo was noted on page 134 in the Gakken publication “Perfect Guide, The Aircraft Carriers of The Imperial Japanese Navy & Army” as March 19th, 1945. The question came up as to whether SHIMANE MARU was sunk during this air attack. The answer would have to be no; Jentschura, Jung, and Mickel in “Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1869-1945” list her sinking date as July 24, 1945.
