An understanding of how to obtain alternate fuels goes hand-in-hand with information on the various types of alternate fuels and what is needed to make a vehicle run on them. Given the complexity of a modern automobile, performing a conversion to an alternate fuel supply is more difficult than in the past. Few modern automobiles are equipped with manually-adjusted carburetors, for example. Fuel conversions often require changes to the program run by the automobiles engine computer. Such modifications are usually out of the reach of the typical consumer. However, there are companies that supply after-market parts to the conversion industry. Some companies offer services to convert gasoline engines to propane or natural gas, because these fuels are often used in short- and medium-range industrial vehicle fleets.
