Where abouts is our solar system positioned in the Universe?
I’m uncertain about where it is in relation to the entire Universe, but I can approximate it’s location in the Milky Way. No need to be redundant, galaxy means milky way. If you were to think of the Milky Way as a sphere of stars extending outward from a central core 70,000 light years radiating all directions our star system would be located inside the NNW quadrant about 11,859.7 light years at an azimuth of about 283 degrees and a zenith of about 84 degrees. If the known Universe is supposedly about 13.8 billion light years across and this galaxy is roughly 6.2 billion years old I could guess us to be a little less than 1.4 billion light years from the center of a sphere of stars and other stellar and planetary matter 13.8 light years in diameter. This is just a guess though since the entire Universe is in a constant state of flux through both a red and blue matter-anti-matter interval. The charts that unitedcats provided with links will tell you much more that I with my guessing. He
hoarsema… has good observation. And so does some one else. Sorry, forgot the name. Evil Genius! We are limited by what’s called “the light horizon”, which is something like 13.6 billion years. We can’t see beyond this, because the light still hasn’t arrived at us. In other words we can’t see what’s on the other side of the big bang location. We also can not see 13.6 light years beyond on our side of the universe. So, we don’t know where we are and where the edge is if there is one. Some one once said, humans would never be able to leave Milky way galaxy. That sounds reasonable. However, we are able to compute the mass of the whole universe. Seriously! And out of the accountable mass evidently only 5% is visible, not necessarily to us. Oh well!!!
Well, are Solar System is located in the Orion Arm in our Galaxy, the Milky Way, so you should be asking where our Galaxy is positioned in the Universe. Well, our Galaxy is in the galaxy cluster called the Local Group. And the Local Group cluster is in the Virgo Group supercluster (a big galaxy cluster which is made up of our galaxy cluster and others). But no one knows for sure where our Galaxy is.
