When writing surnames is it correct to use an apostrophe?

0

I’ve never heard of or encountered any special written treatment of proper pronouns other than requiring the capital initial. The only tricky thing about surnames is that they are often used in the plural with reference to multiple family members and as a simple plural, there is no apostrophe before the s. However, when the plural is also in the possessive case there is a need for an apostrophe but no need for an additional s. So, for example: John Smith’s dog is called Jones. But, if it’s the family dog: The Smiths’ dog is called Jones. ————- Yeah, you can love the Smiths. That’s fine. But, if you love the Smiths’ dog, you need an apostrophe.
