When writing a song what should come first, the lyrics of the melody?

if you are any kind of writer worth your mettle then i think you will find the answer within your heart because that is where all the best writing comes from, i have been writing songs and poetry and stories for almost 17 years and when writing songs sometimes the lyrics came first and i found the melody just letting my fingers flowing over the keyboard or i would be in the bath and i would suddenly start humming a tune, if the tune fitted a song i was writing i would record it or if it didnt i would record it and save it anyway in case it fitted something else i wrote , and i would listen to it occasionally and sometimes i would suddenly hear the lyrics in my heart and would know. so, my advice, play around with both, mess with the keyboard, play a chord or two on the guitar (if you know how) or if you dont learn it’ll be fun, do some free writing, basically sit there with a pencil and paper and just write what is ever in your deepest heart of hearts,(never start writing on the comput
