When writing a date in roman numerals, does the month come first or the date?
In the Roman tradition, dates were not written in Roman numerals. The typical way of expressing a date was something like “two days before the Ides of March”, or “three days after the nones of July”. The years were referenced to the name(s) of the consul that was in office at that particular time (e.g. “during the consulate of Paulus Aemilianus”).
