When working in a clothes shop how can I show initiative and stand out from the crowd?

Paul’s Right. I hate going into shops where the sales assistants are standing round chatting to one another. As a customer, I always feel threatened and wouldn’t approach them with a question. Aside from generally being willing and helpful to customers, I’d always do little jobs as you find them; tidying up rails of clothes, putting them back in size orders, tidying the till area, and sorting out clothes from the Dressing Room rails etc etc. Failing finding any small jobs yourself, i’d always ask my manager if I could get involved with the window dressing or stock ordering… something like that, just so they know you’re keen to get involved.

Always try to keep busy, if you just stand around chatting the management may wonder what they are paying you for. Wander the floor tidying any racks/shelves as you go, pick up rubbish if people drop it, keep the shop tidy, offer assistance to customers where appropriate don’t wait for them to come to you, try to sell-up e.g ‘this belt would go lovely with these jeans’, offer to help colleagues if they are busy and you can find nothing to do, if all else fails ask your manager/supervisor if they have any tasks you could do.
