t’s the last period of school, two days before the arrival of envoys from the Queen of England. About 20 students with the symphonic band are rehearsing several numbers for ceremonies on Saturday morning, when the British emissaries will officially tender their invitation to the high school band program to participate in the world-renowned London New Year’s Day Parade and Music Festival for its 25th anniversary on Jan. 1, 2011. The kids are arrayed at the base of the amphitheater-like band room. Refulgent with musical potential, the sizable room contains all kinds of instruments just waiting for the attention of youth, who probably don’t fully understand the exciting possibilities available to them. There are not one, but two, vibraphones, full kettle drum and kit drum sets, all manner of percussion instruments, and a piano, just for starters. The Mount Desert Island High School Band be performing in London, England on New Year’s Day 2011. The event is the 25th anniversary New Year’s Day Parade. There will be more than 10,000 performers in the parade, which will have a street audience of about 500,000, and it will be on TV around the world. Executive Director of the parade Bob Bone and Deputy Lieutenant of London Roger Bramble traveled to MDI to deliver the news. Bone says they were an easy choice. ” A very very good reputation for making very good music. We we’re attracted to them first of all because they have a good concert reputation.” He says they brought a lot to the parade two years ago, and he is sure they will add even more this time around. “Every American band adds a great deal to the parade.
