When will the Belle Urban System place its new hybrid buses in service?
As I recall, they were supposed to hit the streets late last year. Mass transit in Racine will have to go green some other time. Five new buses are scheduled to arrive in February to replace part of the aging fleet, but they’re diesel-powered like the existing ones, said Steven Rogstad, general manager of the Belle Urban System. The city announced in April 2009 it had been awarded $2.5 million in federal stimulus funds for transit improvements, including about $1 million it planned to splurge on four new hybrid buses. But Rogstad said the money is flexible. He said the new buses will likely be the standard 35-footers, rather than the shorter ones that had been proposed. The projected fuel savings isn’t worth the extra cost for the hybrids right now, Rogstad said.
