When will snow begin to fall in Austria?
Down in the valleys snow in December is always a gamble. In Vienna it is not very likely as Vienna is on the eastern end of Austria which is generally dryer then the western parts. A previous poster mentioned Linz, the place I live, and I can tell you snow in November that stays is the exception not the rule. Even a white Christmas is not guaranteed here. The city of Salzburg is more to west than Linz or Vienna and it’s a bit higher but I chances still are good that everything is green in December – especially until mid December. Chances are much better in the mountain areas. Everything that is about 1000m above sea level or higher has a good chance of snow in December – and that’s where your brother would like to go for snowboarding anyway.
