When will motorists be required to get new vehicle plates and how much will the new plates cost?
The DMV will begin to issue new vehicle plates in the spring of 2010. The last general re-issuance of vehicle plates in NYS occurred nearly 10 years ago. The cost of the new vehicle plates will add a one-time fee of $25 to a registration renewal and any transaction that requires the issuance of vehicle plates for registrations that receive two vehicle plates and $12.50 for registrations that receive one vehicle plate. Registrants can keep their same plate numbers for an additional, optional fee of $20. Periodic re-issuance of vehicle plates is important for overall highway safety, law enforcement and the general integrity of the vehicle registration system. The visibility of reflective vehicle plates decreases with time. The legibility and reflectivity of the current Empire plates, introduced in 2001, was only guaranteed for a maximum of five years.
