Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Stamford in the capital murder case against a Massachusetts man accused of killing Connecticut real estate mogul Andrew Kissel, a former Bergen County resident. Leonard Trujillo of Worcester, Mass., is charged with capital felony, murder and conspiracy, and would be eligible for the death penalty if convicted. His attorney says jury selection is expected to last two weeks, and the trial could start by July 7. Trujillo’s cousin, Carlos Trujillo of Bridgeport, who was the Kissel family chauffeur, is accused of hiring Leonard Trujillo to kill Kissel. Kissel, 46, and his brother, Robert, who also was a murder victim in an unrelated case, are buried in Saddle Brook. Their father, William Kissel, was a manager for Sun Chemical Corp. before starting his own toner company in 1972. The Kissel family had homes in Woodcliff Lake and Saddle River. Carlos Trujillo’s case was set for jury selection Wednesday, May 30, 2009 but a judge postponed the proceedings after last-minute developments in a related case in light of evolving talks of a plea deal with the co-defendant, Carlos’ cousin Leonard Trujillo. Andrew Kissel was found dead in his backcountry mansion in Greenwich in April 2006, stabbed to death days before he was to plead guilty on federal multimillion-dollar fraud charges.
