I’m actually somewhat surprised that they casted you, but yeah, you can totally return to participation once you strenghten the area. Unfortunately if you completely tore the ligament it will never fully heal, however through physical therapy you can strengthen the musculature surrounding the area which protect the torn ligament. I only say that I’m surprised about the casting because often times sports specialists (generally orthopedic doctors) will place the individual in a pneumatic walking boot if they decide that immobilization is needed (it can be removed during therapy sessions), then control swelling, maintain range of motion, and then begin strengthening the area. You will work on range of motion, regaining strength, and improving balance in the injured leg to prevent future injury when you’re in physical therapy.
