The answer to this question varies depending on the type of course. No course needs to be open to students before the official start of the semester in question. To find those dates, you can go to the link called Academic Calendar. on the right side of the Log in page. Course sites for Web100 and Web80 courses will be open the day those courses are set to start on the published course schedules. Other courses that are using WebCT (even Web50 courses) may not be using their WebCT sites at the start of the semester. WebCT sites that will be used at the beginning of the semester are usually up a week or two before those dates, but how much content is going to be available to students yet is going vary greatly from site to site. And note that while WebCT creates a course shell for all courses offered during the semester not all instructers use WebCT course sites.
