Holograms have changed surprisingly little in the last several decades and holographic TV’s are still WAAAY off. The reason is that holograms bear little resemblance to what we’ve been shown in movies and the like. In movies, holograms are 3D images projected into thin air by light and they generally move around animated controlled by computer. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. Holograms do create an illusion of a 3D object but that image is stored and only exists on a flat 2D surface just like a photograph. Because of the way the interaction of lightwaves are stored on film, the 2D image you see changes according to the angle you view it from. This creates a prospective effect. With 2 eyes each viewing a different angle you get a stereoscopic effect and the image appears to pop out of the film. This is still very cool but nothing like the movies.
