Fireworks light up Jones Beach NEWSDAY STAFF 11:06 PM EDT, July 4, 2009 Beachgoers seeking sun and a prime view of the fireworks jammed Jones Beach State Park yesterday. By midmorning the Field 6 parking lot was full, and the sand was packed with people reveling in the balmy weather after June’s damp chill. “Jones Beach has one of the best fireworks, next to Macy’s,” said Stella Georgiou, 45, of Flushing. Georgiou and her sister came yesterday morning and planned to stay for the show — a family tradition since she was a child. Linda Poliandro, 45, and her family left their Islip home at 6 a.m. in a 40-foot recreational vehicle to stake out a prime parking spot in Field 4. They hit the beach in shifts, then returned to their awning’s shade to wait for fireworks. “We don’t want to be in the middle of the crowd,” said Poliandro, stretched out in a lawn chair. “We go back and forth, we come and we use our own showers.” Visitors dozed under beach umbrellas or oiled up to catch rays.
