In the UK slavery was abolished in 1833 with an Act of Parliament “Slavery Abolition Act”. The campaign to end slavery had begun sometime earlier though and the act abolished slavery in all but a few places (St Helena , Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and possessions of the East India Company. Britain had outlawed the slave trade with the Slave Trade Act in 1807, with penalties of £100 per slave levied on British captains found importing slaves. This however did not stop British ships transporting slaves, if they were in danger of getting caught they would throw the slaves overboard. When it became obvious that this law wasn’t working the Anti-Slavery Society was formed to abolish the practice once and for all and the above act was finally passed in 1833.
