WIMBLEDON, England — Venus Williams is just about the perfect older sibling: She supports Serena endlessly, protects her fiercely and even lets her pick which bedroom she wants when they’re on the road. Where does Venus draw the line? At Grand Slam championships. The sisters face each other again in a major final, meeting Saturday for the Wimbledon title for the fourth time. “I’m happy for her to be in the final, but I have to face her and defeat her,” Venus said after reaching her eighth final at the All England Club by routing top-ranked Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0. “I don’t necessarily want her to lose, but for sure I want me to win.” After their showdown, the sisters become teammates for the doubles final, where they are the defending champions. Besides having won five Wimbledon singles titles, beating Serena in last year’s final, Venus is trying to become the first woman to win three straight championships since Steffi Graf from 1991-93. “Even if she’s not playing her best, just that f

(AP) — The oldest sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams was shot to death Sunday in the crime-ridden Los Angeles suburb that the family left years ago, authorities said. Yetunde Price, a registered nurse who owned a beauty salon, was a personal assistant to her famous half-sisters. Price, 31, had been with a man in a sport utility vehicle shortly after midnight and “somehow they had become involved in a confrontation with the local residents,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Pena. Sheriff’s deputies surrounded a house in Compton early Sunday, searching for three people believed to be involved in the shooting, but the house turned out to be empty. No arrests had been made yet. Price was shot in the upper torso. Deputies on patrol heard the gunshots and found Price, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The man who had been with her in the SUV

Serena Williams considered skipping the 2000 Australian Open to attend design classes, then decided to play. She showed up for her first match of the year wearing red shoes, which made it easier to see her eight foot faults. She committed 55 unforced errors before outlasting a wild-card opponent ranked 261st in three sets. Quietly, the Serena Decade had begun. There were plenty of distractions, bold fashion statements, swing-from-the-heels groundstrokes and close calls to come. Through it all, Williams kept on the way she started – winning. The decade will end with Williams No. 1 in the rankings and high on the list of tennis’ greatest champions. She has won 11 major titles, the most of any active woman, and inspired the term “Serena Slam” when she swept four majors in a row in 2002-03. More at source link.
