The pony express was established in 1860 to carry mail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, CA. This was a distance of nearly 2000 miles. After the telegraph came to CA in 1861 the express was no longer needed. In the 18 months of the express the promoters missed only 1 trip, but they lost a great deal of money on the operation.
