When was the pipe organ invented?
The pipe organ was accidentally invented by an Ancient Roman barber, who noticed a tone being produced by a pneumatic piece of equipment he used. he refined the mechanism, and came up with a water-filled pressure chamber for wind and keys to activate notes. The instrument was termed the ‘hydraulis’ and was a favourite for accompanying gladiator matches. It was the world’s first keyboard instrument, and evolved into the pipe organ as we know it via another medieval variant called the portative organ.
