When was the first sewing machine invented?
For something as mundane a sewing machine it has a very colourful history! There were several attempts at a machine that sews made through the 1700’s. A man known as Thimmonier ( not sure of the spelling) from Paris France created a machine that made a chain stitch and he was almost lynched by the tailors’ guild. They felt a sewing machine would put them out of business. Walter Hunt worked on a sewing machine in the 1830’s but never bothered to patent it. Hunt also worked on safety pins and repeating rifles. Elias Howe refined the previous machines and worked out a big mechanical problem in forming a stitch when he realized he would need to put the eye of the needle in the point, This solution apparently came to Howe in a dream, he was being chased by a bunch of men with holes in the points of their spears.
