When was the first heart transplant attempted?

I watched what I believe was the first successful heart transplant on a dog. It was performed at the Westminster Hospital in London England in about 1956-7. The dog lived for 10 days. I was working in the department of medical photography at the time and the transplant was filmed. I would be interested in confirmation of the date.
