When Was The Film Grease Released?
The film ‘Grease’ was based on the musical and was released in 1978. The film starred John Travolta as Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton John as Sandy Olsson. The film differed slightly from the play. The character Sandy was American in the play, but the character had an Australian accent in the film. This was due to Australian actress Olivia Newton-John not being able to change her accent to American, and so in the film Sandy ended up being a transfer student and her surname was changed. Other changes included characters’ names being changed and the name of the boys’ group being changed from Burger Palace Boys to the T-Birds. The film was successful and made both John Travolta and Oliva Newton-John stars (John Travolta was already well known from his previous role in Saturday Night Fever). In 1979, the film received five Golden Globe nominations. It was released on video in the 1980s and then released again in 1998 as a 20th anniversary edition. In 2002, the film came out on DVD.
