When was the FBI founded and what was its purpose then?
John Fox: The FBI was officially founded on July 26, 1908. This was the day that Attorney General Charles Bonaparte ordered 34 Department of Justice investigators (nine of them new hires from the Secret Service) to report to Chief Examiner Stanley Finch. They were to be assigned to make investigations for the US Attorneys. This force’s purpose was to investigate violations of federal criminal law and other matters assigned to it by the President, Attorney General, and congressional enactment. In March of 1909, AG Wickersham named the group the Bureau of Investigation.
