When “A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes” was published, there were a number of newspaper articles that were printed about it during early January of 1920. One of these was the New York Times article on January 12 titled “Aim to Reach Moon with New Rocket.” The next day the Times printed an editorial on page 12 under the heading “Topics of the Times” that laughed at Dr. Goddard and his assertion that a rocket’s thrust would be effective beyond the earth’s atmosphere. Part of the editorial stated “That professor Goddard, with his “chair” in Clark College and the countenancing of the Smithsonian Institution, does not know the relation of action to reaction; and of the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react – to say that would be absurd.
