When was the decision made to build the harbour?
When Vuosaari was acquired by Helsinki in 1966, one of the reasons was the area’s suitability for harbour purposes. The first master plan, with a harbour located between the Valmet shipyard and Porvarinlahti, was prepared in 1975, but it was not until 1996 that the Helsinki City Council approved a harbour plan. In January 2002 the Ministry of the Environment approved a town plan and local plan for the Vuosaari Harbour. In autumn 2002 the Helsinki City Council approved a resolution to build the harbour and Parliament approved the construction of traffic channels. Construction of the harbour began in January 2003.
