When Was Porthmadog Established As A Town?
It was in the year 1811, when William Madocks reclaimed the land for the town from sea. It is a coastal town and local people call it Port. Traditionally, it is a part of Caernarfonshire. During the 19th century, the prosperity of the town had much to do with the slate trade as it was the harbour at Porthamadog, which was being used to export the product everywhere. The town grew quite steadily through the mid-19th century and the population of the place grew from 885 in the year 1821 to more than 3000 in the year 1861. The trade from the harbour started declining when the Cambrian Railway was introduced in the year 1867, as it offered an alternative method of transportation for the rapidly growing industrial towns of England. These days, the town is gaining popularity as a holiday destination and the little trains are providing an important link to the infrastructural transport of North Wales.
