The basic principles of photography have existed since the time of the ancient Greeks, in the fourth century B.C. The concept of still photography dates back to the tenth century, when Arab scientists developed what was known as the “camera obscura” (Latin for “dark chamber”). The camera obscura was essentially a completely darkened enclosure with a small aperture (opening) that admitted light. The light rays would cast an inverted (upside-down) image of external objects onto a flat surface opposite the aperture. The image could then be studied and traced by someone inside the camera or when viewed from outside through a peephole. An entire chamber could become a camera obscura if all light was shut out except for one small hole through which the image of the outside world would reflect upside-down on the opposite wall. I have yet to use a shoe-mount flash on my M-6… I do however use it for a flash trigger to fire a couple of Calumet Travelite Monolites. We often have some minister or top official of the Ecuadorian Government or some notable person come by for an hour long radio program. Last week was the top minister of government, and tommorow is the Presidents brother who is in charge modernization of state owned companies. I am asked to photograph them so we have images that can be used for PR, the on-line news pages and follow up with the guest… The lighting in the studio for available light photography is just awful, overhead fluorescents and overhead spot lights that make noon day sunlight look flattering. On-camera flash is just as worse. So a couple monolights and umbrellas do the trick…. The M camera doesn’t make anyone jerk although the multiple flashes do give a bit of a startle the first time they fire. Now, the ideas and the principals of photography and how photography actually works at a base level go all the way back to the fourth and fifth century B.C. where Chinese and Greek philosophers basically understood how the eye worked which is essentially how a camera works, how the light comes in and bounces off the back surface, usually reversed upside down. Later on the camera obscura came into play and originally, it was just a box with a pinhole in it and called the camera obscura, or a whole room with just one pinhole to let the light in and it would reflect a, an image, upside down and backwards on the reverse wall of what was outside.
