When was Hawaii annexed to the U.S.?
Hawaii was annexed to the United States in 1898. However, the overthrow of the monarchy happened in 1893 in response to a move by Queen Liliuokalani to pass a constitution that restored the power of the monarchy. Feeling their business interests and power threatened, American and British businessman formed the Committee of Safety and asked for troops from the American ship U.S.S. Boston to land under the threat of harm to American lives and property. Not wanting a massive uprising and more of her people killed, the queen yielded her throne and was imprisoned.In 1900 Hawaii officially became the Territory of Hawaii.
