When was group prayer “outlawed” in public schools?

Some teachers/administrators honestly don’t realize that student-initiated prayer is allowed. My husband is taking education classes, and one professor insisted that any teacher who sees a student praying at school for any reason, whether alone or in a group, was obligated to stop it. My hubby printed out the summaries of Supreme Court cases defining the differences in teacher-led prayer and student-led prayer. To the prof’s credit, she acknowledged she had misunderstood the law. But how many new teachers had she sent out to schools with that same misinformation? I suspect misunderstanding is the cause of a lot of the lawsuits and arguments over prayer in school.
