When was Fort Vannoy established, and was it really a fort?
Fort Vannoy was originally a part of the Applegate Trail and was built at the mouth of Vannoy Creek. Mr. Vannoy operated a ferry that took travelers across the Rogue River. In the late 1850s, Fort Vannoy Elementary was built as a one room school house. The school was built on its current site in the early 1900s and has seen several renovations since that time. The most recent addition was in the 1970s. This was when the current K-3 structure along with the gymnasium and cafeteria were built.
