When was Everest not the highest mountain in the world?
1988. From the 1988 Guiness book of records: “Mount Everest’s claim as the world’s highest mountain, maintained for 135 years, was finally challenged by K2 (formerly Godwin-Austin), also known as Chogori, in Pakistan in an announcement on 6 Mar 1997 by the US K2 expedition. Their satellite transit surveyor yielded altitudes of between 29,064 and 29,228 ft 8858-8908 m as against the hitherto official 19th-century figure of 28,250 ft 8610 m, and the 20th-century proposed height of 28,740 ft 8760 m.
