When was Accutane prescribed?
Although it was developed in the 1970’s, Accutane was not approved for sale for treatment of severe acne until 1982. It was sold from then until June 29, 2009, when the maker of the drug, Hoffmann-LaRoche, discontinued production and sales of the drug in the United States, citing business reasons. During the more than 25 years that Accutane was sold, it was prescribed to more than 5 million people in the United States and 13 million people worldwide. At the time it was discontinued by Roche, the company reported sales of $1.2 billion per year from sales of Accutane in the United States alone. Some attribute the decision by Roche to discontinue sales of Accutane to the growing number of lawsuits filed by people who suffered severe side effects after taking the medication.
