When visiting third world countries should I give gifts to children?
Speaking in general: no, you shouldnot. At least: not directly. First of all, because of the hassle it will create you; as soon as you give anything to one child, you will have children literally swarming all around you. A better idea is to make a donation to a local NGO or welfare organization. They should have a sound knowledge of where needs are greatest. Once, however, I made one exception to this rule I impose also upon myself ( to not give gifts to children ). I freed a Thai under-age prostitute from her slavery by buying her back and bringing her to a local temple. It sure got me into danger and cost a lot of money, but I imagine I managed to save some young girl’s life. However, if you decide to do such a thing, donot be queasy or soft-hearted, prepare well, and leave the country as soon as you can afterwards.
