When translating in Spanish…?

Most Spanish words that end in ‘o’ are masculine, and most Spanish words that end in ‘a’ are feminine. There are exceptions, of course. The most common ones I can think of are the following: — words of Greek origin that end in -ma like problema, tema, and sistema are masculine. — El Papa (masculine) means Pope. La Papa (feminine) means potato. — Shortened words follow the rule for the long word. Foto is short for fotografĂa (I think), so it’s feminine. Moto is short for motocicleta, so it’s feminine. English articles are not gender-specific, so you won’t know if the Spanish equivalent is masculine or feminine until you translate it.
