When to fertilize a lilac tree?
This depends on what you are wanting from your Lilac 1) If you want lots of flowers – Never fertilize. Lilacs perform much better in poor soil. 2) If you want lots of leafy growth with few or no flowers – then you can go ahead and fertilize in the spring as growth begins. Be aware that the faster growth rate from fertilizing Lilacs will also make them more susceptible to Lilac Borers – an insect that eats its way through the stems and weakens the trees till they break from all the tunnels.
